Crime scenes are seldom tidy and investigators must painstakingly gather evidence and quickly draw conclusions. On the TV show CSI, investigators have all the latest technology at their disposal. That’s something Henderson police say they don’t have. And the outdated technology is making it tougher to get criminals off the streets.
Channel 8 Eyewitness News is live. Adrian Arambulo tells us about their efforts to fix that problem. Adrian.

Adrian Arambulo
(General Assignment Reporter)

Paula, you detailed the problem. But some think there is a solution and that solution is spelled out on this billboard here. A private groups want to raise $37 million to build a state-of-the-art crime lab for the entire valley and they’re counting on you to help them.
Every week, millions of people watch the popular CSI series. The shows tie together drama and a behind-the-scenes-look at cutting edge crime solving technology. So you might be a bit surprised to see a real life crime lab.

Rick Workman
Henderson Police Department Criminalistics Administrator
It’s an eye opener.
| |
Arambulo

This is a look at Henderson’s current crime lab.
| |
Workman |
We’re unable to do much more than one case at a time.
| |
Arambulo |
| |
Workman

It effects our efficiency and our ability to process particular types of evidence |
| |
Arambulo

And one small garage. That’s it. |
| |
Workman

At the current time we actually have 10 vehicles that are stacked up outside of the garage waiting to be processed.
| |
Arambulo |
Without more space, there’s no place to put new crime solving tools, no room for any new investigators, meaning it’ll take more time to solve crimes. But Rick Workman, a Henderson Investigator has a big . . .
| |
Workman |
We’re looking for about a 77,000 square foot facility
| |
Arambulo |
. . . and bold idea.
| |
Workman |
We’ll take a dollar, we’ll take a thousand, we’ll take a million dollars, or more.
| |
Arambulo |
On his own time he’s looking to raise 37 million dollars to build a new crime lab. One all valley police agencies can use. The thing is, he’s looking for donations. Thirty seven million?
| |
Workman

We hope that we’ll be able to tug at the hearts of philanthropists, business people, anyone who lives in this valley. Anybody that wants to help keep this community safe. |
| |
Arambulo

While it’s unlikely the lab will help solve these crimes in less than an hour like on TV, it will help speed up the process. |
| |
Workman |
We’ll process evidence quickly. We’ll be able to solve crimes faster. We’ll prevent crimes. And we’ll save lives as a result of this facility.
| |
Arambulo |
Now the group is optimistic that people will help with all of the efforts to build this new crime lab. In fact, an advertising company donated this billboard and actually produced the sign for free. Francis

Adrian, what kind of tools are they wanting to have at the proposed lab? |
| |
Arambulo

Paula, a lot of the things that you would see on CSI; DNA testing, blood/alcohol testing, even a microscope that can analyze gun shot residue The technology is available, it’s out there, it’s just a matter of finding the space to put all these new tools into. Paula, back to you. |
| |
Francis

Thanks Adrian |
